A new episode of our Pulp Tales<\/a><\/em> podcast dropped earlier, and this one is different from the others.<\/p>\n

Unlike the 133 prior episodes, which were recorded at PulpFest and other conventions, this is a stand-alone one. It’s the first of The Tonik Tapes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I first met Albert Tonik<\/strong> at Pulpcon<\/a> in the mid-2000s, but I was already familiar with him well before that from his pulp fanzine articles and his participation in online forums. He even contributed bibliographic information and comments for ThePulp.Net when I added the pulp-reference bibliography pages<\/a>. He passed away in 2018 at age 92.<\/p>\n

Starting with PulpFest 2012, Al put much of his collection up for auction. Selections continued popping up for auction after then. In 2019, I was interested in one lot in particular: a box of cassette tapes of interviews with pulpsters that he had recorded over the years.<\/p>\n

I lost out in the bidding to fellow collector Ray Skirsky<\/strong>, who sadly has also passed away. Fortunately, Ray allowed me to take the box of cassettes home after PulpFest and digitize them. A month or so later, I mailed the box and a couple of discs with the digitized recordings back to Ray.<\/p>\n

The timing felt right to finally start sharing them. It’s the 95th anniversary of the debut of The Shadow Magazine<\/a><\/em>, we just posted Al’s article on his Jerome Rozen<\/strong> interview<\/a>, and it’s the 30th anniversary of ThePulp.Net<\/a>. Three reasons is enough.<\/p>\n

This first episode of The Tonik Tapes<\/a> features Al’s recording of his conversation with pulp artist Jerome Rozen (Doris Rozen<\/strong>, Jerome’s wife, and their housekeeper chiming in on occasion) from 1983. Rozen talks about his career as an artist, about his twin brother, pulp artist George Rozen<\/strong>, and more.<\/p>\n

Al was working with 1980s cassette technology, so the audio can be difficult to follow at times, and some tapes start mid-conversation or end abruptly. But the content makes them important.<\/p>\n
