Here it is Monday night, July 26. PulpFest<\/a> is just a few days away, and like many of you, sadly, I won\u2019t be attending this year.<\/p>\n

Pulp festivities kickoff at 9 p.m. Thursday, July 29, and continue until around 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 2.<\/p>\n

The Pulpster, Number 19<\/figcaption><\/figure>It looks to be a terrific pulp gathering. The PulpFest committee \u2013 Jack Cullers<\/strong>, Barry Traylor<\/strong>, Mike Chomko<\/strong> and Ed Hulse<\/strong> \u2013 has put together a calendar packed with events<\/a> I\u2019d love to attend. Sigh.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a while since I have written anything for Yellowed Perils<\/strong>. I\u2019ve spent most of my “pulp time” writing an article for, then designing, The Pulpster<\/em><\/a> (the annual zine edited by Tony Davis<\/strong> and published for the summer\u2019s pulp convention).<\/p>\n

I\u2019m pretty excited about this year\u2019s Pulpster<\/em>. Tony has put together a great selection of articles: PulpFest Guest of Honor William F. Nolan<\/strong> writes about Sam Spade, Destry and Dr. Kildare; Don Hutchison<\/strong>, on pulpster David Goodis<\/a>; Frederick Painton<\/a>, on Arthur Burks<\/a>\u2019 plot trick (reprinted from a vintage Writer\u2019s Digest<\/em>); John Locke<\/strong>, on pulpster Paul Ernst<\/a>; Nick Carr<\/strong>, who answers 10 pulp questions he\u2019s been asked; Wayne Leighton<\/strong> (aka Rex Layton<\/strong>), on L. Ron Hubbard<\/a>; David L. Fox<\/strong>, on Max Brand<\/a>\u2019s first year writing for Western Story Magazine<\/em><\/a>; Bruce Stirling<\/strong>, on Carroll John Daly<\/a>\u2019s “Three Gun Terry”; and my article, on a forgotten 1978 Doc Savage<\/a> TV movie script.<\/p>\n

I have to give kudos to Francesco Francavilla<\/strong> for drawing a wonderful Doc Savage illustration to accompany my article. You can take a sneak peak of the illustration<\/a> on his Pulp Sunday blog<\/a>. (While you\u2019re there, check out all of his other terrific illustrations.)<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Pulpster<\/em> sports its first color cover (that\u2019s it above left) and runs 44 pages. If you\u2019ve registered for PulpFest (to attend or as a supporting member), you\u2019ll receive a copy. If not, check out the PulpFest website<\/a> after PulpFest for details on purchasing one.<\/p>\n

If you, like me, can\u2019t make it to PulpFest, consider some of the other pulp gatherings. There may be one near you. I\u2019ll be attending the Arizona Doc Con<\/a> in November. (More details to come regarding that, so stay tuned.)<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a listing of pulp events<\/a> on the TPN home page<\/a>. Hope you can check out one of the gatherings. Getting together with fellow pulp fans is a great experience.<\/p>\n
