The Echoes Index<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I\u2019ve mentioned it before, but the past few years I\u2019ve really focused my collecting efforts more on pulp fanzines and reference books than actual pulps (though that doesn\u2019t mean I haven\u2019t been buying pulps, too).<\/p>\n

My filing cabinet is filled with zines and I have others stuffed in spaces on my bookcase. (Then there are several boxes of duplicates in the closet. I\u2019ll try to remember to bring them to Doc Con<\/a> again, if anyone is interested.)<\/p>\n

Besides storage space, the real trouble with zines is tracking down which pulp zine that article about such\u2013and\u2013such appeared in. I remember reading it, and it was on the left\u2013hand page, but which issue was it in?<\/p>\n

The first thing I turn to is a nifty little booklet put together by James Van Hise<\/strong><\/a>: A Guide to the Fanzines \u2018Pulp,\u2019 \u2018Xenophile,\u2019 \u2018Nemesis Inc.\u2019 and \u2018Golden Perils\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s 16 pages plus covers, filled with brief descriptions of each issue \u00a0of the four zines it covers. The index material is collected in a paragraph for each issue, so it\u2019s not as quick to scan for information as, say, how issue contents are organized on Phil Stephensen\u2013Payne<\/strong>\u2019s Galactic Central<\/a>. But it\u2019s still very useful.<\/p>\n

Van Hise sells copies of the booklet often on eBay for around $15.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a new reference available for Tom and Ginger Johnson<\/strong>\u2019s Echoes<\/em> fanzine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Matt Moring<\/strong> over at Altus Press<\/a> has posted The Echoes Index<\/em> as a free PDF that you can download<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The index comes from information culled from Echoes<\/em> by Tom Johnson, Mike Chomko<\/strong><\/a>, Bill Thom<\/strong><\/a> and the late Robert Sampson<\/strong>. The index is organized in a spreadsheet\u2013like format, with columns for the name\/subject, article title, issue number and the article\u2019s page numbers.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s version 1.0 of the index, so Matt asks anyone who discovers a mistake to let him know so that he can update the index.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, I can see that I will be a terrific aid for finding that next article that I just can\u2019t remember where I saw it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
