Publishers Pulps Reprints

Publishers: Age of Aces

Continuing my look at publishers, we look at another of the pulp reprinters: Age of Aces Books.

Devildog Squadron #1Started in 2007, Age of Aces is editor Bill Mann and brothers Chris Kalb and David Kalb, who do some of the best-designed books on the market. Chris is art director and David is designer. Chris was responsible entirely for The Spider volume, as well as Captain Babyface and Sheridan Doome.

All their volumes are well designed, including interior artwork and sometimes other extras.  I’m not sure who does the best designed pulp reprints.  Its pretty much a tie between Age of Aces and Steeger Books.

Age of Aces’ focus has been on air-war/aviation pulp stories, with only a few deviations. Those being their best-selling The Spider vs. the Empire State, which reprints the “Black Police Trilogy” from 1938, and the two Sheridan Doome volumes, which reprint the two novels of U.S. Naval Intelligence Detective Sheridan Doome before he appeared as backup stories in The Shadow.

They have put our nearly 30 other volumes by Donald Keyhoe, Robert J. Hogan, Steve Fisher, Arthur J. Burks, Ralph Oppenheim, and more.

These include The Red Falcon, The Three Mosquitoes, Philip Strange, The Jailbird Squadron, Captain Combat, Coffin Kirk, Captain BabyFace, Smoke Wade, and more.

I know they have recently kicked off the first of a four-volume reprint of Donald Keyhoe‘s Devildog Squadron. They also put out occasional special volumes at PulpFest (like Coffin Kirk).

I have several of their volumes, mainly their Keyhoe volumes. Air-war/aviation isn’t a big interest of mine, unless it has a fantastical element that many of Keyhoe’s works do. So I am not certain what other series they might be looked at doing in the future. I know Flying Aces had several other series, like the Phineas Pinkham by Joe Archibald that ran for 12 years. But there are many other air pulps to be mined as well. Whatever they pick, am sure it will be excellent and look great! So do check them out for all your air pulp needs.
