Fanzines Non-fiction Review

‘The Bronze Gazette’ #98/99

In early 2026, we got a double issue of The Bronze Gazette: No. 98/99. Or maybe I should call it a flip issue.

The Bronze Gazette #98-99The same was done with No. 96/97, which I missed posting on.

The Bronze Gazette is the premier Doc Savage fanzine, which was offered as a subscription for these “two” issues. The final issue, No. 100, will be coming out later this year, but will not be available by subscription. Instead, once it is ready, we can purchase it.

No. 98 (February 2026), with a cover by Ron Hill, has five articles. From Tom Barnett, we get a look at the person who voiced Doc on his first radio show in 1934: Edwin Max. Craig McDonald provides an article on Monk’s pet pig, Habeas Corpus. Will Murray does a deep dive into Doc’s, or perhaps Dent’s, mercy bullets. Courtney Rogers shares his interesting three-dimensional artwork based on Doc covers. And Aaron Sakulik examines the dish “lahm quishtah” and provides a recipe.

No. 99 (February 2016) has four articles under a cover that is a takeoff of a famous National Lampoon cover. Julian Puga provides another of his articles, this time looking at information in certain stories that helps in dating them, as they have real-world inspirations. M.J. Morgan has an article on “Street & Smith’s World’s Finest,” meaning Doc and The Shadow, as DC’s World’s Finest featured Superman and Batman. Michael Spitzer tells us about a Doc Savage story he proposed to Condé Nast years ago that was not accepted. Steve Donoso asks whether or not the restored text in the Doc stories published by Sanctum Books should be considered canon.

Another great issue, with a lot of strong articles. I look forward to No. 100, but also dread it, as it will mark the end of this wonderful Doc Savage fanzine. It is sad to see it go. Physical fanzines are getting rarer, even if things like print-on-demand make them easier to produce.

  • Michael,

First, thank you for the kind words.

Due to my poor choice of words, it appears some believe that Bronze Gazette Issue #100 will be the last.

    That is not the case.

#98/#99 was the last ever for subscriptions, that’s true.

Issue #100 will be a special issue as we’re not limited to 50 pages.

After that, we will continue with issues that will be offered for sale after they are completed. (As Ed Hulse does with Blood N’ Thunder.)

Yes, print-on-demand does make magazines easier to produce, but we like our printer — a lot — and we have zero plans to go the print-on-demand route.

I’ve always said Bronze Gazette will continue as long as we’re alive. Considering the fact the editor is in her 20s, that should be a long time indeed.

    Take care,

    Chuck Welch
    Publisher, Bronze Gazette

PS: Yes, flip issues were something I’m been wanting to do for years and thanks to Ron Hill’s covers we had the perfect opportunity.

    • Great to know as I was under the impression it was all coming to an end with #100.

I look forward to further issues and will be reviewing them here.
