In spring 2026, we got the third novel in the Paradise Investigations series from Teel James Glenn. This series, set in 1939 New York City, stars Adam Paradise, a private investigator who is Frankenstein‘s monster. The Undiscovered Country is set six months after the prior novel, and it’s now 1939. The Nazis are in power in Germany. As with the rest of this series, it’s from Macabre Ink from Crossroad Press.
While we have yet to get the full story, it’s clear that after his creator abandoned him in the Arctic, he educated himself and has been wandering the world, most recently being in England. He is about 7 feet tall, with mismatched hands that he covers with gloves. He has a slight healing factor, is a little stronger than normal, and has a strange ability to “see” things others cannot. Mary Shelley‘s story is noted as a fictionalized version of what really happened.
He has a small circle of friends and contacts, most of whom do not know who (or what) he really is. His Roma secretary, Vandoma Kalderash, whom he helped in the first novel, does know. There is also his police contact, Lt. Tommy Shane, who mainly appears in the early part of the book. There is Daniel, a cross-dressing nurse, also only in the early part. Another friend is Lee Han Ku, better known as “Hank,” who is a longtime friend and associate of Dr. Shadows, another New Pulp hero from Glenn. She only appears in the prologue.
This story is set immediately after the events of the last one, but before we get into that, we get a prologue that both sets up this story and shows the first meeting with Hank and Adam. While recovering from the events of the last novel, Adam gets a strange message from someone he had helped before. Once he recovers, he decides to head to New Orleans, accompanied by Vandoma and her brother Nico, to search for him.
While there, they get help from some of the Romani clans and a voodoo priestess Adam meets. But they also run afoul of the local Klan, and there is a bigger mystery and danger. Will Adam be able to find his friend and put an end to the evil?
While the end of the novel is a bit strange, we are told that another one is on its way. And as Adam and friends decide that instead of heading back to New York City, they will go to Hollywood, I assume the next story will be set there. Wash This Blood Clean From My Hands will be the fourth novel. I have no idea when it will appear, but I look forward to it. I assume at some point they will return to New York.
I am interested in seeing where this story is going. And will we see an appearance of Dr. Shadows in the future? I would certainly like to see more of this character, as it’s been a while.
