Old Time Radio (OTR) Pulp The Shadow

Going on hiatus

This blog, That’s Pulp!, is going on an extended vacation. I can’t tell you when I’ll return… I don’t know.

To all you pulp fans who have visited here over the past two years, I want to thank you for your interest, your support, and your kind comments. And to Bill Lampkin, who owns and operates ThePulp.Net, I want to extend my sincere gratitude for allowing me the opportunity to address you weekly. A nicer and more helpful guy I’ve never met.

I hope you will all continue to support pulpdom. Read those great old stories; don’t let them die. Buy the old magazines. Support the efforts to reprint them. Attend the pulp conventions. Share your enthusiasm among your friends. If you’re an artist, I hope that the pulps inspire your works. And if you’re a writer, may you write about the pulps. Write some pulp fiction!

If you don’t have a copy of my book, The Shadow in Review: The Ultimate Guide to the Pulp Magazine Series, let me put in one final plug. Every novel of The Shadow is reviewed in over 500 pages of pulpy satisfaction. And all for only 10 bucks. You can order it at my page on Lulu.

And finally, something special just for you. I’ve placed a rare radio script for The Shadow online for you to download. What makes it so rare? It’s the earliest Shadow radio script known to exist, titled “Special Orders,” originally broadcast on Oct. 5, 1932. This was five years before Orson Welles made his debut as the invisible crimefighter on Mutual. In this script, The Shadow is not part of the story… he is only the announcer and host. And Frank Readick was the voice of The Shadow.

Here’s the link to the script (a 12MB pdf). It’s my parting gift… from me to all of you.

    • There’s nothing specific that I’m planning to replace That’s Pulp! if that’s what you are asking. But I’ve always got lots of projects in the works. Things to read… mostly pulp of course. Things to write… often pulp related. Things that are Shadow-related… my favorite pulp character.

And then there’s just life in general. It all adds up to more than 24 hours of stuff, or so it seems. Every day, there’s things I didn’t get done, that slop over onto tomorrow. It keeps every day exciting. Let me tell you, retirement is anything but boring!

  • I ordered a copy of your book and can’t wait to get it in the mail. As a new Shadow fan, this site is a gold mine of information!

    • Thanks for ordering my book. Keep in mind that the reviews are just my own opinion and you might disagree with them. I’m hoping you’ll read and enjoy the old Shadow magazine stories, whether the actual old pulps or the new reprints. Make up your own mind about each individual story. Let my book help guide you in your choice of stories to read first. But eventually, you’ll want to read them all! Trust me!

You’ve got some great reading in front of you…

      John

  • John, I hope you can get more out your allotted 24 hours than you are now. I look forward to your next venture and hope you keep the blue light lit in your own sanctum. Take care.

    • I don’t know how it might be possible to squeeze more than 24 hours into a day, but if there’s a way, I’ll sure be looking for it. Maybe if I googled it?

Thanks for the kind words, Joe. Take care…

  • Good luck and once again thanks for your book as I reviewed it on GR I hope plenty moe folks will discover your hobby.

    • Thanks for the kind words, Mark. Thought the kindness of Bill Lampkin, owner of ThePulp.Net, my weekly columns will remain available for the foreseeable future. I hope others, who might have come late to the party, will be able to enjoy them.
