One of the blogs I follow regularly is Rough Edges by prolific western author James Reasoner.
There’s uncertainty about which pulp genre sold more magazines: westerns or love/romance. But as John Dinan points out in his book “The Pulp Western”:
During (the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s), the pulps published western fiction in phenomenal abundance, reflecting the public’s desire of escapist reading. There has been, perhaps, no greater amount of written material produced in such a short time on a given theme, before or since.
Dinan goes on to list 184 western pulp titles.
In a recent post at Rough Edges, James Reasoner picks his favorite western pulp magazines. As he says, it’s “a list of 10, in alphabetical order, with the usual caveat that if you asked me tomorrow, I might change my mind about some of them.”
Reasoner’s top western pulps:
- Dime Western
- Exciting Western
- Rio Kid Western
- Spicy/Speed Western
- Star Western
- Texas Rangers
- Thrilling Western
- Western Aces
- Western Story
- Wild West Weekly
Head over to Rough Edges to find out what makes each pulp magazine one of Reasoner’s favorites.
