Doc Con Events News PulpFest Pulps Windy City

Pulp conventions for 2015

Rich Harvey bookends the pulp show season with a pair of Pulp AdventureCons in 2015.

A new Pulp AdventureCon opens the year on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Universal Palms Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., while the long-running Pulp AdventureCon closes the season on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Ramada Inn in Bordentown, N.J. Both shows run from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

In between, though, are plenty of opportunities for you to attend a pulp gathering.

On Sunday, March 22, the Los Angeles Vintage Paperback Collectors Show (formerly the Mission Hills show) is back for its 36th year from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Glendale, Calif., Civic Auditorium. More than 45 authors and artists are expected to attend. While it focuses on paperbacks, the show also has pulps and pulp-related books for sale by vendors.

On April 17-19, the 15th annual Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention returns to the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center, Lombard, Ill. (a suburb of Chicago). The convention will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of the birthday of horror master H.P. Lovecraft. In addition to a large vendors room, the con features plenty of programming, an auction, and a film series.

That same Sunday, April 19, the 61st Michigan Antiquarian Book & Paper Show takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lansing Center in Lansing, Mich.

The next month, Neil and Leigh Mecham, the brothers behind Girasol Collectibles, will be holding the 19th annual Fantastic Pulps Show & Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lillian H. Smith Branch of the Toronto Public Library in Toronto, Ont.

The Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship (ECOF) has its annual gathering June 4-7 in Rockville, Md.

Cross Plains, Texas, will be celebrating Robert E. Howard Days from June 12-13.

PulpFest 2015, the successor to the long-running Pulpcon, returns to Columbus, Ohio, on Aug. 13-16. Like Windy City, this multi-day gathering of pulp fans features a large dealer room, an auction, and plenty of programming. Joining PulpFest again this year will be FarmerCon X, celebrating the works of writer Philip José Farmer.

Aug. 20-23, fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs will again gather for the annual Dum Dum. This year’s convention will be in Clinton, Conn.

October brings a couple of pulp gatherings that have yet finalized their dates.

Kincon, formerly Edmond Hamilton & Leigh Brackett Day, will be held in Kinsman, Ohio, to honor the science fiction writing couple.

Fans of Doc Savage will convene in Glendale, Ariz., for Doc Con XVIII. (A date for Doc Con should be known in late April, after the Arizona Cardinals finalize their fall football schedule.)

We’ll post dates for both of these conventions as soon as they are set.

And, as I mentioned at the start, rounding out the convention season is Pulp AdventureCon in New Jersey on Nov. 7.

You can always see the latest upcoming pulp events by looking at the listing on the right side of most pages at ThePulp.Net.

Which ones are you planning to attend?

  • An entire alternate universe of pulp conventions, completely—well, mostly—separate from the many science fiction and fantasy conventions being held around the country, and the world, which mostly don’t overlap, though many people have interests in all these things.
