A bit later I read Warner’s The Avenger paperbacks and Avon’s Flash Gordon paperback series, not knowing that Goulart ghosted the later Avenger stories and the first four Gordon books until years later.
Also, he edited The Hardboiled Dicks, an anthology of detective fiction from the pulps, and wrote The Dime Detectives.
Goulart was hospitalized with pneumonia in December, and was suffering from dementia and difficulties swallowing, his wife, Frances, posted recently on Facebook.
Yesterday was his 89th birthday.
Mark Evanier posted on his blog News From Me that Goulart died this morning.
Goulart’s Cheap Thrills, along with Tony Goodstone’s The Pulps, spurred on my interest in the history of the pulpwood magazines as much as reading stories reprinted from them.
Thank you, Ron Goulart, for inspiring me and other pulp fans.
